SUMMARY:7th Argo Science Workshop - October 2022
DESCRIPTION:This international workshop is hosted by Euro-Argo and will take place at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels\, as a hybrid event with in-person and virtual attendance options. \nThe workshop aims to bring together ocean science research that has employed Argo data and products to further improve our knowledge of the changing oceans and highlight the applications that the new OneArgo array is opening. SUMMARY:EUMETSAT “Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications”
DESCRIPTION:EUMETSAT and the Oceanography & Earth Observation Group of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are jointly organising the training course “Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications (SMA)”. \nThrough this course participants will learn how to independently access and process data from the EUMETSAT product catalogue for their marine workflows and applications. The focus will be on data streams from EUMETSAT Copernicus marine missions (Sentinel-3; Sentinel-6) and derived downstream products\, those derived from Copernicus supporting missions\, and those made available by the Ocean and Sea-Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF). \nTraining will take place fully online in two phases: \n\nBetween 31 October and 18 November 2022 (9-15 hours) –  self-paced flexible learning through webinars\, forums and technical checks (particularly for software installations)\, documentation and assignments.\nBetween 21 and 25 November 2022 (5-7 hours a day) – virtual classroom via Zoom and other collaborative tools\, made up of interactive tutorials\, live demos\, group work\, and 1:1 meetings.\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is a technical training event\, designed to increase the ability of all attending to access and use EUMETSAT marine products for their own applications. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to register\, click here.

DESCRIPTION:The workshop will present e-shape project’s pilots related to biodiversity and water management. DESCRIPTION:The European Marine Board is organising a foresight workshop titled “Ensuring accurate climate related predictions in Europe by 2035” from 15 to 16 March 2023 in Brussels. \nThis workshop is supported by the Innovation Action “EuroSea”\, one of the European Union’s contributions to the G7 Future of Seas and Oceans Flagship Initiative. The EuroSea foresight workshop will consider the Ocean Observation System in 2035\, and look for pathways to ensure its sustainability in all European Ocean basins to deliver accessible\, timely\, and actionable information to all users who rely on this system. The expected outcomes of this workshop are key recommendations for mechanisms to sustainably fund and coordinate Ocean observation\, prediction and information delivery in Europe. DESCRIPTION:The IOC UNESCO working group Integrated Ocean Carbon Research (IOC-R) workshop is co-sponsored by IOC/ UNESCO\, the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative\, Ocean Decade Programme Ocean Negative Carbon Emission (ONCE) and hosted by the European Commission and its EU4OceanObs action. Besides IOC UNESCO\, IOC-R is supported by the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research Project (IMBeR)\, the Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS)\, the Climate and Ocean Variability\, Predictability and Change project (CLIVAR)\, the Global Carbon Project and International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP). \n  \nEstablished in 2018\, the IOC Expert Working Group of the Integrated Ocean Carbon Research (IOC-R) aims at filling knowledge gaps in relation to ocean inorganic carbon by designing and promoting the implementation of a new generation of integrated ocean carbon research. DESCRIPTION:The European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual 2-day event during which Europe’s maritime community meet to network\, discuss and outline joint action on maritime affairs and sustainable blue economy. \nThe EMD is the place where ‘Ocean Leaders Meet’. SUMMARY:3rd international operational satellite oceanography symposium (OSOS-3)
DESCRIPTION:The Third International Operational Satellite Oceanography Symposium (OSOS-3) will be held in Busan\, South Korea from 12 to 15 June 2023\, co-sponsored by EUMETSAT\, NOAA and the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA). There will also be an optional training day on 16 June 2023. \nOSOS-3 will build upon the foundation set during the first symposium gathering in June 2019\, and second virtual meeting in May 2021. Community members involved in all levels of the observation-to-information value chain\, from data providers to users\, of operational satellite oceanographic data\, products and applications contributed prior OSOS outcomes and recommendations \nThe aims of OSOS-3 are to feature research and applications in Asia\, the Pacific (including small Island nations)\, and high-latitudes. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating a decade of marine research cooperation along and across the Atlantic Ocean – Our Shared Resource\n\nThe event is co-organised by Irish Government\, the European Commission\, the Marine Institute\, and the University of Galway. It will be a hybrid event held in Galway\, Ireland\, on 5-6 July 2023\, bringing together European and international Atlantic partners and actors.\n\n\n\n\nMuch has happened since the Galway Statement was signed in May 2013 between Canada\, the European Union and the United States of America.  More than 1000 research teams have started to map the North Atlantic seabed\, discovered new deep-water volcanoes and species\, studied the effects of deep-sea mining and the changing climate on the biodiversity\, created a network of floating universities\, shared research infrastructures in the Atlantic and Arctic regions\, and much else. These successes have led to a new ocean-scale cooperation\, culminating in the signing of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Declaration in Washington DC.\n\nThis event will also lead the way up towards the 2023 All-Atlantic Forum in South Africa\, and it will interconnect with new strategic mobilisation initiatives that have also been launched in Europe\, such as the Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’\, with its Atlantic and Arctic lighthouse. SUMMARY:International Marine Debris Data Harmonization Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The overall goal of this international technical workshop is to enhance the level of data including associated metadata identification to support global data harmonization for selected key marine debris indicators that will underpin the successful mitigation of plastic pollution. The workshop will present the state of the art when it comes to harmonization of monitoring methods and data synthesis efforts but will predominantly include working/discussion sessions in plenary and dedicated breakout groups. \nThe 3-day workshop will take place in Yokohama\, Tokyo\, Japan\, hosted by the Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOEJ) with organisation support from GEO Blue Planet\, Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)/ IOCCP and NIVA Norway and funding support from the European Union through the EU4OceanObs and EuroSea projects.  The event will bring together about 50 invited participants\, including international experts in marine debris data management\, monitoring\, and harmonization of methods. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:EuroSea Final General Assembly and Symposium 2023
DESCRIPTION:The EuroSea project entitled ‘Improving and Integrating European Ocean Observing and Forecasting Systems for Sustainable use of the Oceans’ is a EU-funded Horizon 2020 Innovation Action running from November 2019 to December 2023. Bringing together 55 institutes from EU and beyond\, the project is a contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)\, and the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans initiative. The final general assembly will take place from 19 to 20 Sept will reunite all partners to look back at the project period\, the biggest achievements and of course challenges. The event will also look ahead at EuroSea’s legacy and next steps. \nEuroSea worked to accelerate the Technology Readiness Levels of instruments\, sensors and platforms\, and integrating these observations with ocean models\, delivering cost-effective actionable information for improved ocean governance and monitoring. EuroSea focused on innovation in the full ocean observing value chain – from the requirement setting to data collection and delivery of forecasts and information. EuroSea impact will result in knowledge transfer towards innovation in the European ocean observing\, monitoring and governance in support of a sustainable blue economy and responding to policy needs. \nThis final meeting will be followed by the EuroSea Symposium on Ocean Observing and Forecasting on 21 September 2023 at the IOC-UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The Symposium is a high-level event bringing together national and international stakeholders from policy\, science\, and industry. It will celebrate the remarkable innovations in European ocean observing and forecasting over recent years. It will serve as a platform for participants to reflect on past achievements and address the challenges that lie ahead in this vital field. The event aims to present and discuss recommendations for building a sustainable ocean observing and forecasting system that provides accessible\, timely\, and actionable data and information to all ocean users. DESCRIPTION:The EMODnet Open Conference 2023 is a public\, in-person event in Brussels\, Belgium. This provides a unique opportunity to gain access to cutting-edge marine data service updates\, influential speakers\, have your say in EMODnet’s evolution and expand your network\, connecting and exchange with EMODnet experts from the EMODnet partnership\, associated partners\, data providers\, service providers\, users and wider stakeholders from Europe and around the world. \nThe 2023 Conference will be the first of its kind since the unification of EMODnet thematic services in January 2023. It will showcase the upgraded EMODnet Central Portal and the added value of a single entry point to discover\, search\, visualise and download all of EMODnet’s marine data and data products\, and the value of centralised features and functionalities. \nEMODnet continues to evolve. At the Conference\, EMODnet experts from the full partnership will present the latest developments and innovations in EMODnet’s in situ marine data services\, user-interface and infrastructure to meet user and policy needs for a digital and green future. \nThis will include EMODnet’s key role in the EU Digital Twin Ocean\, including the creation of a common data lake between EMODnet and Copernicus Marine Service. SUMMARY:Ocean Observation and Prediction for Coastal Sustainability in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Building on the outcomes of the Coastal Hazards Plenary Session and Coastline Changes workshop held during the GEO Blue Planet 5th Symposium (2022\, Accra)\, this event will focus on identifying the priorities and needs for ocean observations and prediction to address the challenges of coastal sustainability in Africa. Presentations and discussions will leverage extensive work led by international groups on the regional strategy for sustainable marine and coastal development for Africa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to explore the role of ocean observation and prediction in addressing stakeholders needs aligned with the AU blue strategy\, the UN Ocean Decade roadmap and in particular the formulation of international frameworks around four thematic areas: \n\nShoreline and bathymetry changes\nCoastal flooding and inundation\nCoastal ecosystem mapping\nCoastal waters quality\n\n\n\n\nClick here for more information. \nFunding and technical support for this workshop is provided by the European Union through EU4OceanObs/ GEO Blue Planet EU Office.
