SUMMARY:G7 Ocean Decade Navigation Plan Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will take place virtually\, hosted by the UK Department for Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to discuss: \n\npossible cooperative structures for the G7 to use to implement the G7 Ocean Decade Navigation Plan and contribute to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development\,\nbest practice regarding international collaboration with a range of partners\, and\nhow the G7 can identify priorities to translate to actionable initiatives.\n\nThe group will focus on three spotlight priorities: Global Ocean Indicator Framework\, Digital Twin Oceans\, and Net-Zero Oceanographic Capability. DESCRIPTION:Supporting collaborative marine research across the Atlantic and beyond\nA workshop jointly organised by Blue-Cloud and the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance \nBlue-Cloud deploys a web platform featuring an unprecedented wealth of multidisciplinary data repositories\, analytical tools\, and computing facilities to explore and demonstrate the potential of cloud-based Open Science\, in the context of key European and international initiatives such as the EU Green Deal\, the UN Ocean Decade and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This European-funded project federates leading European marine research infrastructures (SeaDataNet\, EurOBIS\, Euro-ARGO\, ICOS\, SOCAT\, ENA\, EMODnet\, Copernicus Marine Service) and e-Infrastructures (EUDAT\, D4Science\, WEkEO DIAS)\, allowing researchers to combine\, reuse\, and share quality data across disciplines and countries. \nThe webinar will present the Blue-Cloud Open Science platform for marine research and the Blue-Cloud Hackathon in February 2022. A  panel discussion with speakers from the marine research community\, will discuss the joint policy brief “Nourishing Blue Economy and Sharing Ocean Knowledge” published in October 2021. SUMMARY:EU Africa Week 2022: dialogue on ocean governance
DESCRIPTION:Fostering a cross-continental Africa-Europe dialogue on ocean governance\nOn several occasions\, starting in Abidjan in 2017\, the European and the African Unions have emphasised their mutual interest in advancing a common and prosperous ocean agenda. Ocean governance\, including sustainable fisheries and blue economy\, is an area in which closer cooperation could benefit both continents. \nIn support of the UN 2030 Agenda and\, in particular\, Sustainable Development Goal 14 (“life below water”)\, and Africa’s 2063 Agenda\, both continents would benefit from a joint approach emphasizing the importance of oceans and seas\, not only for the safety\, security\, well-being and healthy environment of our societies\, but also as a catalyst for socio-economic changes in the face of climate change and the pandemic. \nThis cross-continental dialogue amongst government officials and non-state actors could enhance mutual understanding about ocean-related priorities\, whereby the two continents would have an opportunity to advance a shared agenda\, working together towards a mutually beneficial partnership in favour of economic opportunities\, environmental preservation and resilience to climate change. Discussions will be centred on the following questions: \n• How could greater Africa-Europe cross-continental action on ocean benefit our economies and populations\, while minimising threats to the environment? \n• How could the two continents make the most of this decisive year and ensure a common approach is designed and deployed for the oceans? \n• What are the biggest bottlenecks in relation to ocean governance to be addressed? DESCRIPTION:The kick-off of phase 2 of the Copernicus Marine Service\, 17 and 18 February will officially mark the continuation of the Service. Implemented by Mercator Ocean International on behalf of the European Union\, Copernicus Marine has been providing free\, open\, regular and systematic reference information on the blue (physical)\, white (sea ice)\, and green (biogeochemical) ocean state\, variability and dynamics across the global ocean and European regional seas. This event will gather Copernicus Marine partners and downstream users\, and showcase the road map for the upcoming seven years in the second phase of the Copernicus Earth Observation Programme. \nDay 1 will be open to the public. This will be a mix of plenary presentations and round table discussions to present the Copernicus Marine strategy developed for phase #2. Thematics will be highlighted such as: \n\nCopernicus priority actions for the upcoming years\,\nsupport and policies for a safe\, clean and healthy Ocean\,\nintegration of a digital Ocean\,\netc. .\n\nParticipants will also have the opportunity to take part in discussions of how the Copernicus Marine Service is integrates satellite and in-situ components and collaboration with other Copernicus core services including (Climate Change\, WEkEO) and the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). \nDay 2 will gather with Copernicus Marine partners who provide observations and model marine data for the global ocean and the European seas and present mid-term objectives. SUMMARY:G7 FSOI meeting for biogeochemical Argo
DESCRIPTION:The first meeting of the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans (G7 FSOI) Resource Strategy Group for the global Biogeochemical Argo Array 2030 will take place online from 28 to 29 March 2022\, bringing together representatives from the G7 member states (Canada\, France\, Germany\, Italy\, Japan\, UK\, USA and the European Commission). Hosted by the European coordinator of the G7 FSOI Coordination Centre\, supported by EU4OceanObs\, the meeting serves to share information between the G7 members and the International Mission Team on implementation progress and funding commitments for the global Biogeochemical Argo Array. SUMMARY:e-shape solutions: Earth Observation for biodiversity and water management
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will present e-shape project’s pilots related to biodiversity and water management. E-shape is the EU-funded H2020 flagship project working to promote and upscale Earth observation (EO) solutions in Europe and beyond supporting the sustainable delivery of EO-based benefits. \nThe first day will set the stage by introducing the audience to European and natinal policies related to biodiversiy protection and restoration as well as water management. Experts from European and National institutions will present relevant funding opportunities. The second day will be entirely dedicated to the presentation of e-shape pilot projects\, coupled with presentations from local actors. SUMMARY:European Ocean Observing System Strategy Launch 2022 - 2023
DESCRIPTION:Advancing EOOS – the foundation of European ocean knowledge \nEurope needs strong and connected ocean observing capacities. This is necessary to understand\, benefit from and respond to the dynamic ocean environment that is essential for life on Earth\, especially in the face of ongoing climate change and its implications for European societies. By synergistically federating and further developing its ocean observation capabilities as the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS)\, Europe will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of efforts to understand its ocean\, seas and coastal waters. \nWith the new EOOS Strategy 2023-2027\, and its accompanying Roadmap for Implementation\, the development of EOOS will be developed in line with its Mission to coordinate and integrate European communities and organisations operating\, supporting and maintaining ocean observing infrastructures and activities\, fostering collaboration and innovation. SUMMARY:European Marine Board | EuroSea foresight workshop
DESCRIPTION:The European Marine Board is organising a foresight workshop titled “Ensuring accurate climate related predictions in Europe by 2035” from 15 to 16 March 2023 in Brussels. \nThis workshop is supported by the Innovation Action “EuroSea”\, one of the European Union’s contributions to the G7 Future of Seas and Oceans Flagship Initiative. The EuroSea foresight workshop will consider the Ocean Observation System in 2035\, and look for pathways to ensure its sustainability in all European Ocean basins to deliver accessible\, timely\, and actionable information to all users who rely on this system. The expected outcomes of this workshop are key recommendations for mechanisms to sustainably fund and coordinate Ocean observation\, prediction and information delivery in Europe. These will inform a report on recommendations to the Framework of the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS). \nEuroSea (eurosea.eu) is a European-funded project working to improve the European ocean observing and forecasting system in a global context.
