SUMMARY:One Integrated Marine Debris Observing System
DESCRIPTION:Official Satellite Activity of UN Ocean Decade “a Clean Ocean” Laboratory \nThis event is organised by a consortium of 14 international ocean experts and is hosted by GEO Blue Planet\, EU4OceanObs and Mercator Ocean International as an official satellite activity of the 3rd UN Ocean Decade Laboratory “a Clean Ocean”. \nWe will discuss the current state of the marine debris system\, our knowledge about it and ways forward for implementing the Integrated Marine Debris Observing System (IMDOS). DESCRIPTION:The 2nd UN Ocean Decade Laboratory will be held from 15 to 17 September 2021 and will offer valuable insights and talks around the Ocean Decade Outcome: “A Predicted Ocean”. The Laboratory will investigate the key elements required for the change we need to see targeting a predictable Ocean for our societies over the course of the Decade. \nTo register for the event\, please click here. \nThe Core Event will be streamed live\, offering panel discussions and interviews on 15 September from 8:00 pm to 12:00 midnight CEST. You will be able to interact and network with other participants and speakers via matchmaking or direct chats (text and video) also after the Core Event. \nA total of 31 Satellite Activities\, hosted by a diverse range of experts from several fields and targeting various goals will be presented after the Core Event. SUMMARY:Scoping Workshop on a Deep Ocean Observing Activity in the Azores
DESCRIPTION:The Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) and the All-Atlantic Ocean Observing System (AtlantOS) are hosting a Deep Ocean Observing Project Scoping Workshop focusing on the Azores region on 24 June 2021 5 – 9pm CEST. \nTo register for the event\, click here by June 18th. \nThe half-day workshop will identify (i) the scope\, (ii) potential approaches and (iii) contributors for developing a joint project to demonstrate the feasibility of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary deep ocean observing system. This should align with scientific and societal needs in the Azores\, while also exploring approaches that may lend themselves to global-scale deployment in the future. The initiative combines the DOOS concept of ‘Demonstration Projects’ that prove the feasibility and benefits of deep-ocean observing and AtlantOS ‘Use Cases’ approach that showcases the value chain of ocean observing. \nLink with EU4OceanObs \nThe G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative (FSOI) is scoping an activity called Augmented Observations and Forecasting for Marine Life. DOOS participated in the development of the scoping document to highlight deep ocean ecosystem monitoring needs and the outcome of this DOOS-AtlantOS meeting will inform the work of the G7 FSOI Task Team if approved. This scoping activity is led by the FSOI EU coordinator\, supported by EU4OceanObs as part of the FSOI’s priority area to support the development of a global initiative for an enhanced\, global\, sustained sea and ocean observing system. For more information\, click here. \nOceanPredict (oceanpredict.org) is an international research and development network working to accelerate\, strengthen and increase the impact of ocean prediction.  OceanPredict is the the successor of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) that started in 1999 motivated by the Ocean Observation Panel for Climate (OOPC) and ended in 2008 after a decade of successfully developing tools and demonstrating the utility of the ocean observing system for assimilating observations into state-of-the-art models of the global ocean circulation in near real-time.

SUMMARY:Global Biogeochemical-Argo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An online workshop “Global Biochemical-Argo Fleet\, Knowledge to Action”\, building on the priorities of the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative (G7 FSOI) will take place on 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 May and on 1 June. The workshop will highlight the benefits of the global array to multiple users\, identify remaining observing system and data delivery gaps\, and motivate new commitments and partnerships. The workshop is organised by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)\, and the State University of New Jersey (RUTGERS)\, with international coordination assistance from the G7 FSOI Coordination Centre\, and with financial support from NASA\, NOAA\, and NSF. \nThe workshop will present the initial international commitments to the Biogeochemistry-Argo system and discuss how to ensure that the combined investment meets the priorities of the G7 and international funders and stakeholders. The workshop will prioritise next steps with partners to ensure full implementation of the array and the international collaboration required to sustain the global biogeochemal Argo fleet into the future. DESCRIPTION:Under the theme Integrated Solutions #ForNature\, the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment (UN-SPBF) will convene its Third Global Session online from 18-20 February 2021\, in the lead up to the Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly. \nThe Global Partnership on Marine Litter\, will co-host a session on Managing Risk: Marine Litter and Microplastics Mitigation and Prevention. The head of the GEO Blue Planet EU Office – Audrey Hasson from Mercator Ocean International\, will participate in this Session as a speaker. \nThis session will include the Phase I release of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter Digital Platform. The aim of the GPML Digital platform is to facilitate coordination of multi-stakeholder action towards the long-term elimination\, through a life-cycle approach\, of discharges of litter and microplastics into the oceans using AI capabilities\, data mapping and layered functionalities including match-making. \nThe session will examine the following key questions: \n\nWhat does the latest science tell us about the risks posed by marine litter and microplastics for ecosystems\, human health and society ?\nIn order to manage and mitigate the risk of marine litter in our environment\, what urgent policy action is required at the multi-lateral and national levels?\nWhat part does innovation\, technology and finance have to play? And what does multi-stakeholder cooperation offer in the management and mitigation of marine litter and microplastics related risk?\n\n
