SUMMARY:Global Biogeochemical-Argo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An online workshop “Global Biochemical-Argo Fleet\, Knowledge to Action”\, building on the priorities of the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative (G7 FSOI) will take place on 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 May and on 1 June. The workshop will highlight the benefits of the global array to multiple users\, identify remaining observing system and data delivery gaps\, and motivate new commitments and partnerships. The workshop is organised by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)\, and the State University of New Jersey (RUTGERS)\, with international coordination assistance from the G7 FSOI Coordination Centre\, and with financial support from NASA\, NOAA\, and NSF. \nThe workshop will present the initial international commitments to the Biogeochemistry-Argo system and discuss how to ensure that the combined investment meets the priorities of the G7 and international funders and stakeholders. The workshop will prioritise next steps with partners to ensure full implementation of the array and the international collaboration required to sustain the global biogeochemal Argo fleet into the future. DESCRIPTION:Setting the Course for a Sustainable Blue Planet  \nThe European Commission in association with the European External Action Service invite ocean stakeholders worldwide to the presentation of the final recommendations for ocean sustainability action by the EU’s International Ocean Governance (IOG) Forum. \nThe event will mark the conclusion of the open and inclusive consultation process on International Ocean Governance launched by the European Commission in association with the European External Action Service in 2020 with the establishment of the IOG forum. . \nThe recommendations will support the development of the International Ocean Governance Agenda –the EU’s plan of action for the future of our oceans\, an integral part of the European Green Deal and the EU’s response to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, in particular\, the Sustainable Development Goal 14 ‘to conserve and sustainably use the oceans\, seas and marine resources’.

SUMMARY:UNEP-SPBF Third Global Session: Marine Litter Session
DESCRIPTION:Under the theme Integrated Solutions #ForNature\, the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment (UN-SPBF) will convene its Third Global Session online from 18-20 February 2021\, in the lead up to the Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly. \nThe Global Partnership on Marine Litter\, will co-host a session on Managing Risk: Marine Litter and Microplastics Mitigation and Prevention. The head of the GEO Blue Planet EU Office – Audrey Hasson from Mercator Ocean International\, will participate in this Session as a speaker. \nThis session will include the Phase I release of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter Digital Platform. The aim of the GPML Digital platform is to facilitate coordination of multi-stakeholder action towards the long-term elimination\, through a life-cycle approach\, of discharges of litter and microplastics into the oceans using AI capabilities\, data mapping and layered functionalities including match-making. \nThe session will examine the following key questions: \n\nWhat does the latest science tell us about the risks posed by marine litter and microplastics for ecosystems\, human health and society ?\nIn order to manage and mitigate the risk of marine litter in our environment\, what urgent policy action is required at the multi-lateral and national levels?\nWhat part does innovation\, technology and finance have to play? And what does multi-stakeholder cooperation offer in the management and mitigation of marine litter and microplastics related risk?\n\n
