SUMMARY:Global Biogeochemical-Argo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An online workshop “Global Biochemical-Argo Fleet\, Knowledge to Action”\, building on the priorities of the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative (G7 FSOI) will take place on 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 May and on 1 June. The workshop will highlight the benefits of the global array to multiple users\, identify remaining observing system and data delivery gaps\, and motivate new commitments and partnerships. The workshop is organised by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)\, and the State University of New Jersey (RUTGERS)\, with international coordination assistance from the G7 FSOI Coordination Centre\, and with financial support from NASA\, NOAA\, and NSF. \nThe workshop will present the initial international commitments to the Biogeochemistry-Argo system and discuss how to ensure that the combined investment meets the priorities of the G7 and international funders and stakeholders. The workshop will prioritise next steps with partners to ensure full implementation of the array and the international collaboration required to sustain the global biogeochemal Argo fleet into the future. But the ocean is also under massive threat. To achieve this vision\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2021 to 2030 as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (the “Ocean Decade). \nEU4OceanObs and the Ocean Decade\nThrough its G7 FSOI action\, EU4OceanObs will work closely with the Decade’s ocean observing projects and programmes to co-evolve joint activities\, targeting where G7 high-level support can add unique value. The EU4OceanObs GEO Blue Planet component will participate in leveraging the Group on Earth Observations’ (GEO) convening power and interdisciplinary work programme to mobilise action to enhance the use of ocean and coastal observations in support of the Decade.

DESCRIPTION:EU4OceanObs will co-host 3 side events at the All-Atlantic 2021 conference that will take place from 2 to 4 June 2021. The All-Atlantic 2021 is a Ministerial High-Level & Stakeholders Conference that will take place under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union\, in close cooperation with the European Commission\, aiming to strengthen Research & Innovation cooperation across and along the Atlantic Ocean\, from “pole to pole”.  The event will be a step forward in the work developed by the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance\, bringing together Ministries\, high-level representatives and ocean leaders\, including researchers\, youth\, entrepreneurs\, academics\, and civil society. \nThe side events co-organised through the EU4OceanObs actions on the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative and GEO Blue Planet will address global ocean data sharing and infrastructures\, and monitoring and managing of marine litter and Sargassum in the Atlantic basin. DESCRIPTION:Towards an integrated Global Environment Monitoring System for Oceans – Aspiring to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 14: to “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans\, seas and marine resources for sustainable development” \nThe GEMS/Oceans event is a “kick-off” session at the Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2021 (SRI2021 – Future Earth) and will discuss and appraise cutting edge approaches for assessing the state of the ocean globally and also offer an opportunity to influence the way forward. For more information\, click here. \nOceanPredict (oceanpredict.org) is an international research and development network working to accelerate\, strengthen and increase the impact of ocean prediction.  OceanPredict is the the successor of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) that started in 1999 motivated by the Ocean Observation Panel for Climate (OOPC) and ended in 2008 after a decade of successfully developing tools and demonstrating the utility of the ocean observing system for assimilating observations into state-of-the-art models of the global ocean circulation in near real-time.

SUMMARY:Scoping Workshop on a Deep Ocean Observing Activity in the Azores
DESCRIPTION:The Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) and the All-Atlantic Ocean Observing System (AtlantOS) are hosting a Deep Ocean Observing Project Scoping Workshop focusing on the Azores region on 24 June 2021 5 – 9pm CEST. \nTo register for the event\, click here by June 18th. \nThe half-day workshop will identify (i) the scope\, (ii) potential approaches and (iii) contributors for developing a joint project to demonstrate the feasibility of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary deep ocean observing system. This should align with scientific and societal needs in the Azores\, while also exploring approaches that may lend themselves to global-scale deployment in the future. The initiative combines the DOOS concept of ‘Demonstration Projects’ that prove the feasibility and benefits of deep-ocean observing and AtlantOS ‘Use Cases’ approach that showcases the value chain of ocean observing. \nLink with EU4OceanObs \nThe G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative (FSOI) is scoping an activity called Augmented Observations and Forecasting for Marine Life. DOOS participated in the development of the scoping document to highlight deep ocean ecosystem monitoring needs and the outcome of this DOOS-AtlantOS meeting will inform the work of the G7 FSOI Task Team if approved. This scoping activity is led by the FSOI EU coordinator\, supported by EU4OceanObs as part of the FSOI’s priority area to support the development of a global initiative for an enhanced\, global\, sustained sea and ocean observing system.
