Event description

Co-organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the City of Rio de Janeiro, the 2027 edition will build on the outcomes of the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona, Spain, and carry forward the ambition of the Ocean Decade.

Programme

  • Main Conference (7-9 April 2027): up to 2,000 participants from around the world will gather to showcase progress, spark partnerships, and scale solutions that will shape the future of the Ocean Decade to 2030 and beyond.
  • Pre-Conference programme (5-6 April 2027): a dynamic line-up of partner-led satellite events, exhibitions, and networking opportunities across Rio de Janeiro.
  • Who’s involved: governments, scientists, civil society, Indigenous leaders, youth, private sector, and philanthropy.

Objectives of the event

  • Showcase and track achievements towards the Barcelona Statement.
  • Agree on the urgent and immediate actions to the end of the Decade to deliver priority knowledge for policy and decision making.
  • Agree on partnerships and actions to lay the foundation of the post-2030 legacy of the Decade.
  • Inform dialogue at the 2028 United Nations Ocean and contribute to the post-2030 Agenda dialogue on ocean issues.
