The European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service just released its 5th edition of the Ocean State Report Summary.  This annual reference report provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art assessment on the current state, natural variations, and ongoing changes in the global ocean and marine environments in the face of climate change and anthropogenic threats, particularly for the year 2019.

22 September 2021 saw the release the of Ocean State Report 5 (OSR 5) Summary by the Copernicus Marine Service and Mercator Ocean International.  A concise, illustrated, easily accessible review of the full OSR 5*, the Summary serves as a reference for the scientific community, policy-makers, and the general public to better understand the importance and impacts of a changing ocean and marine environments.

Comprising four sections, the OSR 5 Summary presents state and key observations of a changing ocean, examines the evolving impacts of these changes in the face of climate change, discusses the importance of sustainable ocean governance for managing impacts, and highlights new tracking and forecasting tools developed using Copernicus Marine products. Throughout the Summary, the need for accurate and timely data and information is emphasised as key to better monitoring, understanding, and adaptation to a changing ocean.
